Although this year's Wings & Waves Festival, which was scheduled to be a one-day event on Sep. 4th, had been unanimously voted down by ASLC at its June meeting, members got re-energized in proposing a new one-day event in Lincoln City. "Audubon Presents" will take place on September 5th at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Highway 101.
Karen Hoyt, founder of Hunters in the Sky, is a featured speaker at 2pm on Sunday. Sky Hunters Environmental Education presents “Hunters of the Sky,” an introduction to local birds of prey. This local 501(c)3 non-profit organization was created to teach awareness and respect for wildlife and wild places. With this in mind, Karen Hoyt - founder and director of Sky Hunters, will introduce you to four different native species with an emphasis on identification and habitat use and will share many interesting facts about these wild ambassadors. All of the birds in her program are non-releasable due to an injury or disability.
"On The Wing" tells the story of a remarkable flock birds that became the heart of Portland, OR where people worked to coexist with nature instead of smoking it out. The stars are tiny birds called Vaux Swifts that, since the early 1980's, have taken up residence in the chimney of a Portland Elementary School during the month of September. You'll learn their story when you attend the video showing in the Lincoln City Cultural Center's Auditorium at 12:30pm on Sunday, Sep 5th.
More information on the weekend's events will be forthcoming in the days ahead.
